Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal announcement to force Mikel Arteta into difficult decision amid Eze hope

Send Push

Arsenal have hit the overdrive button in recruitment this summer as they head toward what could be a record-breaking spending window. Having confirmed four signings before pre-season and two more at the advanced stageof negotiations, the club are in new territory.

The club hope to confirm the arrivals of Cristhian Mosquera and Viktor Gyokeres in the near future as conversations continue to complete the long-awaited deals. Unfortunately, the moves could not be done in their entirety before the club flew to Asia for their pre-season tour.

This has naturally and predictably sparked fears over the club’s summer strategy, even in spite of all the business that the club has done. But when looking at the squad ahead of the new season there is a problem, a rather good one, that Mikel Arteta is set to have.

Arteta has effectively two options in every single position assuming that the deals for Gyokeres and Mosquera go through. At the goalkeeper role, Kepa Arrizabalaga has joined David Raya.

Ben White and Jurrien Timber offer the depth at right-back, William Saliba and Mosquera at right centre-half, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jakub Kiwior on the left with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Riccardo Calafiori the left-back options. Into midfield and Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard offer the quality for a new-look number six role this season.

Declan Rice and Mikel Merino then give Arteta options as the left eight with Martin Odegaard and Ethan Nwaneri on the right eight/ten role. Bukayo Saka has been joined by Noni Madueke on the rightwhile both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard remain the options for the left.

Kai Havertz has an interesting season ahead of him, with the hope that Gyokeres will be confirmed for the centre-forward. This is 22 players and on a matchday Arteta can only choose 20, meaning the two players will be left out, barring injury, on matchday one at Old Trafford while hope that the likes of Timber and Gabriel will indeed be fit for the start of the season after suffering injuries requiring surgery in the latter part of the previous campaign.

This 22 does not include the currently injured Gabriel Jesus, who presents as a third striker or wing options across the front line. football.london understands the club want a third attacking addition this summer and are very keen on Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, with Xavi Simons a reported alternative.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Reiss Nelson, Fabio Vieira, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Karl Hein are all still at the club, and if they are not sold or loaned, they would be options in addition to those mentioned. Then there are the exciting youth talents joining the pre-season tour, like Max Dowman, Andre Harriman Annous, and Marli Salmon, among others, who could also feature at senior level.

Despite the complaints, the squad looks likely to be very strong for this season. Some might have pressed the panic button too soon.
